Home care after dental treatment
To ensure long term success after dental treatment, you need to follow your dentist guidelines for in-home dental care. At Smile In Style, Diem Do DDS, patient education is paramount to our practice. Dr. Do offers all patients a thorough plan for home care after dental treatments.
Recovering from extractions
Whether you had surgical extraction or simple extraction, you will need to take it easy for a few days. You should also stick to a soft diet and rinse your mouth with warm salt water four times a day, ideally after eating. Too much activity can increase blood flow through your mouth and dislodge the blood clot protecting your extraction site, leaving your bone exposed. This can be very painful, and you will need to come back to the office to get help.
Home care for root canals
Root canal therapy removes the infection from your tooth root, and most patients go home feeling relief. You may have a sore jaw and some discomfort from the medication once the numbing wears off. You should avoid sleeping on the side with the implant the night after your surgery. You can use ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation and massage your face to help with your jaw’s soreness. Avoid chewing with your mouth around the site of your root canal treatment until the next day.
Home care for prevention
No matter what kind of procedure you have had, you need to keep up with the fundamentals of hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, and ideally after every meal. Using a toothbrush with soft bristles, or an electric toothbrush will do a better job disrupting plaque in the chewing surfaces of your teeth and along the gum line. Flossing will remove debris stuck between your teeth and disrupt plaque your toothbrush can’t reach. Once you have brushed your teeth, give them some time to stay clean. Frequent snacking and sugary drinks give oral bacteria a constant supply of food, and planning your meals throughout the day will improve your oral health.
Dr. Do will educate you on the best practices for caring for your teeth to prevent complications from procedures, keep them healthy, and ensure you don’t have further issues down the line.
